Circular Production Without Downtime

A 17 year old nitrogen generator. Well maintained, still operational, but no longer able to meet the required capacity.

For a polystyrene manufacturer, Avilo supplied an upgraded nitrogen generation system for tank blanketing. Within this production process, nitrogen is used to fill the headspace of large storage tanks, protecting the product from oxygen, moisture and other unwanted influences.

Three key requirements were central to the project: increased nitrogen capacity, zero production downtime during the upgrade, and the reuse of existing components wherever possible.

Temporary Nitrogen Supply During the Upgrade

To ensure production could continue uninterrupted during the upgrade, Avilo installed a temporary rental nitrogen generator on site. This allowed the nitrogen supply to remain fully operational while the existing generator was dismantled.

The original generator was then transported to Avilo's production facility in Hellevoetsluis, where the system was rebuilt and integrated into a new generator cabinet.

Upgraded System with Increased Capacity

The upgraded nitrogen generation system is equipped with Parker SmartFluxx nitrogen membranes. In addition, the existing nitrogen membranes were integrated into the renewed system, providing additional capacity whenever required. As a result, nearly all reusable components were given a new purpose within the upgraded installation.

Reusing Existing Components in a Renewed System

By reusing existing components, there was no need to replace the entire installation. The nitrogen supply system has been technically upgraded, expanded and optimised to meet the current capacity requirements.

This project demonstrates how Avilo can modify or expand existing nitrogen systems while maintaining production continuity, increasing capacity and maximising the reuse of existing equipment. Following the successful completion of the project, Avilo received a follow up order for an additional nitrogen generation system, which will be delivered later this year.
