Circular Production Without Downtime

A 17-year-old nitrogen generator. Well maintained and still operational, but no longer suitable for the required capacity.

For a polystyrene manufacturer, Avilo supplied an upgraded nitrogen supply system for tank blanketing. Within this production process, nitrogen is used to fill the headspace of large storage tanks. This protects the contents against oxygen, moisture and other unwanted influences.

The request focused on three main requirements: increased nitrogen capacity, no production downtime during the conversion and the reuse of existing components wherever possible.

Temporary nitrogen supply during the conversion

To keep production running during the conversion, Avilo temporarily installed a rental generator on site. This ensured that the nitrogen supply remained available while the existing generator was dismantled.

The old generator was then transported to Avilo’s production workshop in Hellevoetsluis. There, the system was rebuilt in a new generator cabinet.

Upgraded system with additional capacity

The upgraded nitrogen supply system was fitted with Parker SmartFluxx nitrogen membranes. The existing nitrogen membranes were also reintegrated into the upgraded system. These provide additional capacity when required. As a result, almost all reusable components were given a new function within the upgraded installation.

Reuse within an upgraded system

By reusing existing components, the entire installation did not need to be replaced. The nitrogen supply system was technically upgraded, expanded and better aligned with the current capacity requirements.

This project demonstrates how Avilo can modify or expand existing nitrogen systems while maintaining continuity, capacity and reuse. Following completion of the project, Avilo received a follow-up order for an additional nitrogen supply system, which will be delivered later this year.
